AND may your holidays be bright, blissful and stress free !!!
A week ago I was speaking with my sister Michelle about my upcoming visit. A friend of hers had requested I come down and provide massages for her and her visiting mother. So of course I asked my sister if she and her husband would also like to receive massages while I was there. I've also worked on their kids before - my nephew Ethan (6 yrs) and Leah (4 yrs). On the way home from school the next day my sister told her kids that I would be visiting and asked if they would like massages. Here are their responses:
Ethan: "Oh mom YES! I am sooooo in need of a massage". He had just finished day 2 of 1st grade!
Leah: "My back has been hurting so yes I need a massage. Besides, sometimes it just feeeels good!"
We all know that kids are way smarter than we give them credit. They know that the massage feels good and I believe intuitively they know that massage is good for them - for their whole being - body, mind and spirit.
You might question: A backache on a 4yr old? A 6yr old in "need" of a massage? Really? And I say YES! Leah had just had surgery 2 weeks prior. Ethan had just started 1st grade. Kids DO feel stress - physical and internal - and yes they feel YOUR stress. Kids haven't yet lost their intuitive nature. They "pick up on" the stress in the house. And many time they internalize it - because they don't have the words or the understanding to talk about what it is they are experiencing or feeling. Massage can be a great tool to help them release, rather than hold onto, the stress. The beauty of it is you don't have to take them to see a professional - you can give them a massage. But if you are so busy being a mom, a father, a maid, a gardener, as well as whatever it is you do to bring home an income, then consider seeking out a professional massage for your kids. Especially during high periods of stress. Or as a reward. Besides helping them relax and get out of the "fight or flight mode", it also teaches them about positive touch and staying in tune with their bodies and listening to the messages their bodies are giving them.
So as a result these very wise children did get massages - Ethan for 20 minutes, Leah for 15. With kids my motto is: Do less, Expect More. They don't need a lot of time or a lot of pressure. Their bodies are so willing and absorbant I can do less and expect more result than with an adult. Swedish massage and craniosacral therapy are my favorite modalities for children.
Please feel free to share your stories regarding kids and massage or post any questions you might have regarding this topic.
Oh and thanks Ethan and Leah for being open and willing - I love you both.
In my massage practice, whether a person is looking for relief from pain or from stress I try to remember that their pain and experience is unique to their own life experience. My job is to create and facilitate relief. I listen to the client, I listen to their body and I incorporate different modalities into a massage that fits their needs in the moment. I try to balance the deep and intense work with nurturing work so that nervous system, the muscular system and the whole body accepts and integrates the treatment. My hope is that a person feels renewed, refreshed and revitalized following a session.
In my own words:
When I was feeling scattered and stressed massage always helped me feel whole and balanced. My problems seemed more manageable rather than huge mountains. And certainly the relief I received from the tightness I carried in my neck, shoulders and back from all the computer work was an essential release.
